The 4 way cross clamp fitting is designed to form a 90° joint between an upright, which passes through the fitting and four other handrails.
 
It's typically used in the middle of larger structures such as self-contained play areas. Ideal for structures with multiple verticals. 
 
The through tube (vertical in photo) cannot be connected within the fitting. The vertical must remain either continuous with the cross rails being cut.
