Exploring Internal Connectors for Tubular Structures

Updated: Jan 9

Tubular structures are an integral part of various industries, from water and gas systems to railway infrastructure. These structures often require internal connectors to ensure stability, alignment, and strength. In this blog post, we will delve into the differences between several internal connectors used for joining tubes: Grooved Internal Connectors (GIC), Solid Internal Connectors (SIC), Internal Splice Locks, Galvanised Clamp(150), and Galvanised Clamp Fitting(149). Each of these connectors has its features, and understanding their distinctions can help you make informed choices for your projects.

Grooved Internal Connectors (GIC)

The Grooved Internal Connector (GIC) is a hollow connector designed to join two tubes internally. It provides a secure and reliable connection but requires a bit of drilling and the use of two grub screws that come with it to ensure a firm attachment. The grub screws are typically inserted from the bottom side, allowing for a smooth run of the handrail. GICs are versatile and are commonly used in various industries where robust connections are needed.

Solid Internal connector

For applications in heavy-duty industries that demand sturdy connectors, Solid Internal Connectors (SIC) are the go-to choice. Similar to GICs, they require drilling and two grub screws that come with it for installation. These connectors are solid and provide exceptional strength, making them ideal for applications where durability and reliability are paramount. Like GICs, they also ensure a smooth run for the handrail.

Internal Splice Locks

Internal Splice Locks offer a unique and efficient solution for joining tubular handrails internally. These connectors come in two different sizes. The small size comes with one grub screw while the bigger size comes with two grub screws which are typically drilled from below to provide smooth run of the tubes. Deciding which size to adapt relies on the sturdiness required in the project. These connectors are hollow and known for their ease of use and are widely used in handrail systems.

Galvanised Clamp Fitting (150)

The Galvanised Clamp(150) is clamp-style connector that joins two tubes. It differs from the previously mentioned connectors in that it only comes with one grub screw and requires no drilling, which is advantageous for quick and straightforward installations. However, it's important to note that the Galvanised Clamp(150) does not provide a completely smooth run between connected tubes. Despite this limitation, it remains a popular choice for applications where speed and simplicity are essential.

Galvanised Clamp fitting (149)

Finally, the Galvanised Clamp Fitting(149) is another connector that joins two tubes, but it does so externally. This Clamp connector comes with two grub screws for installation and does not provide a smooth run between the connected tubes. Same as Clamp Fitting(150), no drilling is required when fixing the grub screws as they can be tightened externally. This clamp is typically used in situations where external connections are acceptable, and the focus is on simplicity and ease of installation.

We recommend this clamp fitting for our Freestanding Roof Edge Protection system.

Selecting the right connector for your tubular structure is crucial to ensure stability, strength, and longevity. Each of the connectors mentioned above offers distinct advantages.

Grooved Internal Connectors (GIC) and Solid Internal Connectors (SIC) are robust choices for industries with heavy-duty requirements, while Internal Splice Locks simplify installation with their design. On the other hand, Galvanised Clamp(150) and Galvanised Clamp Fitting (149) cater to different needs, offering quick installation solutions as they require no drilling.

Understanding the differences between these internal connectors will help you make informed decisions when working on projects in specialised industries such as water, gas, or railways. Whether you prioritise strength, ease of installation, or a combination of both, there's a connector that suits your needs.
