PROJECT DETAILS

The Broxburn Viaduct (also known as the Ratho Viaduct, 7 Arches Viaduct, or Newbridge Viaduct) is a notable railway viaduct located in Kirkliston, West Lothian, Scotland. It was built in 1842 and the viaduct features seven segmental arches made from rock-faced ashlar. It spans approximately 127 metres and stands around 17 metres high.

This viaduct is a Category A listed building, showing its importance in Scotland’s architectural and railway heritage.

The viaduct was part of the Edinburgh and Glasgow Railway, designed to maintain a level route for trains, which was a significant engineering achievement at the time.

DID YOU KNOW?

During its construction in the 1840s, the workers faced numerous challenges, including the unpredictable Scottish weather. The local legend has it that the workers would often joke about needing to build an ark instead of a viaduct due to the frequent rainstorms.

KITE'S PART OF THE PROJECT

The Broxburn Viaduct has faced significant weather-related challenges, leading to rust on its metal structure supporting the bridge. To address this, Kite Group supplied the Zinga Film Galvanising system. This system is a film galvanising coat, rich with zinc, that bonds extremely well onto steel, brass, aluminium, and cast iron to form a solid zinc layer containing a minimum of 96% zinc in the dry film. Applying this coating system is a cost effective alternative to hot dip galvanising process and is known as cold applied galvanising system.

By using the Zinga Film Galvanising system, Kite Group has provided a durable and long-lasting solution to the weather-related challenges faced by the viaduct. This approach can be relevant to other projects dealing with similar issues of rust and corrosion, offering a proven method to maintain and protect metal structures.

This solution has effectively preserved the viaduct’s structural integrity and appearance, ensuring its continued status as a historic landmark in Scotland’s railway heritage.
